Lightning Temple Guide: Tears of the Kingdom Walkthrough

The Lightning Temple is the Gerudo dungeon in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is a pyramid hidden in the Gerudo Desert, and it is the last stage of the main quest Riju of Gerudo Town. Inside, you need to activate four batteries with the help of Riju’s lightning, then defeat Queen Gibdo.

This guide covers how to reach the temple, how the puzzles work, how to beat the boss and what you get for clearing it.

Before You Go

  • Heat and cold: the desert is scorching by day and freezing at night. Bring heat resistance gear or food, plus cold resistance for night.
  • Arrows: you will use a lot of them, because Riju’s power is triggered by firing arrows. Stock up on at least 30.
  • Hearts: Gibdos hit hard, and the boss fight is long. Bring healing meals.
  • Weapons: Gibdos are tough to cut. Elemental weapons and fused materials help a lot.

How to Reach the Lightning Temple

  1. Head to Gerudo Town and speak with Riju to start the quest.
  2. Help Riju deal with the Gibdo threat in the area around the town and the underground.
  3. When the quest sends you into the desert, head toward the huge sandstorm.
  4. Inside the storm, fight your way to the Gibdo hive outside the pyramid. Use Riju’s lightning to break it open.
  5. This summons Queen Gibdo for a short fight. She retreats into the temple, and the way in opens up.

Riju’s power: stand near Riju and activate her ability to create a circle on the ground. Shoot an arrow into the circle, and a bolt of lightning strikes where the arrow lands. This is how you break hives, power devices and damage the boss.

Lightning Temple Walkthrough

The goal is simple: find and activate the four batteries spread through the temple. Each battery is a Zonai device that you power up using light and lightning.

How the Puzzles Work

  • Light beams: many rooms use mirrors and openings that let sunlight through. Rotate or move them to point beams at targets.
  • Riju’s lightning: some switches and objects only respond to her lightning strike. Fire an arrow through her circle to hit them.
  • Sand: sand can block paths. Look for ways to clear it or move around it.

Tips for Each Battery

  • Use the map. Open your map inside the temple to see which batteries are still inactive and on which floor they are.
  • Look up and around. Mirrors and targets are often placed high on walls or across gaps.
  • Watch for Gibdos. Lightning stuns them and breaks their hardened shells, which makes fights much easier.
  • Stuck? Many solutions involve moving one mirror slightly so a beam bounces to the next one. Check every angle before giving up.

Once all four batteries are active, head to the central chamber to open the door to the boss.

Queen Gibdo Boss Guide

Queen Gibdo is a giant insect queen who flies around the arena and summons Moth Gibdos to protect her.

  1. Break her shell. Use Riju’s lightning to stun her. Fire arrows into Riju’s circle when Queen Gibdo is inside the strike zone.
  2. Attack while she is stunned. Hit her with your strongest melee weapon while she is down.
  3. Deal with the swarm. Clear Moth Gibdos with lightning or area attacks so they do not overwhelm you.
  4. Phase two. As she weakens, she becomes more aggressive and summons more Gibdos. Keep using lightning to stun her and repeat.

Tips:

  • Keep moving to avoid her charge attacks.
  • If you run low on arrows, smash pots and crates around the arena.
  • Bomb arrows or elemental arrows add extra damage when she is stunned.

Rewards

  • Heart Container
  • Vow of Riju, Sage of Lightning. Riju becomes your companion and can call down lightning on command.

Riju is one of the best sages in the game for combat, because her lightning deals heavy area damage.

What to Do Next

With the Lightning Temple done, you can take on the other regional phenomena. If you have not finished the Wind Temple yet, it is a great next stop. Want a stronger main weapon first? Check out our guide on how to get the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom.
